They decided then and there to patent everything they made (almost literally) so that they could have their own designs to keep everything from other companies. They're just utilizing the system that is in place to its fullest. Of course you don't like all the patent lawsuits they get into, but I'm willing to be that neither do they. Apple's fervent protection of its own intellectual property, combined with all the patent trolling as of late, it has really brought light to the issues involved with the patent system as a whole. Next up: Apple innovates the patent system.
