F ollowing the  ban on the popular app TikTok  by the Madras court, the Indian government has suggested that it will continue to maintain ban in the country, further asking Google and Apple to  pull down the app  from their respective app stores.

The decision to maintain its stance is by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity), which is expected to give out a final verdict on  April 22 , followed by Madras High Court’s hearing, which is scheduled for April 16.

The order released by MeitY  restricts people from downloading  the TikTok app via the Google Play Store or the App Store.  However, existing TikTok users will still be able to use the app.

To recall, an appeal to ban TikTok in India is due to the alleged promotion of pornography via the app.

ByteDance, the company which owns TikTok, stood against the order and suggested that the ban of the app harms Freedom of Speech and causes “irreparable damage”  to the company.

The ban comes after TikTok became the  third most-installed app  during Quarter 1, 2019, both on Android and iOS devices.

Having said that, TikTok has also been facing other controversies; the app was recently  fined for collecting data from children , and an Indian boy was shot dead while recording a TikTok video.
