Something is not adding up here with the stated facts. It strikes me as odd that with the admission of a san bern IT worker changing the apple ID on the phone this is still being discussed. Unless the device has been reset, that’s impossible. You can NOT change an apple ID on an iphone while the phone is configured for it’s current user and locked unless OS access has already been achieved or the phone was reset. That means someone screwed up bad, should be fired immediately and the FBI should retract legal proceedings against apple since the details are no longer valid. No one will be cracking a pincode on a iphone that’s already been reset. If they are being greeted with an apple ID prompt when turning on the phone, the damage is already done and any further pushing of this will be a moot point if this is TRULY only for this phone. Face it, stop whining and get over your mistake.

Bill’s ignorance is alarming, considering how intelligent he is. I guess I can’t fault him, he is thinking this in terms of physical constructs (phone lines, disk drives, ribbons, etc). The problem is that this particular request can be subvertly stolen, copied elecontrically, mulitiplied ad infinitum, maliciously re-engineered, and made into a grandois weapon that would be near impossible to eradicate. People just don’t get that point.

Apple Tech’s should be allowed to perform the procedure under strict confidentiality agreements (US Gov. does not get any say as to where/how it is to be done, and has no right to inspect encryption key’s, codes, or any methods/actions used in the decryption/unlocking of any personal/private phone, computer/media device period). That is how it should go down, and yes, it should happen. Those of you who are just worried about the Gov getting an encryption key with the capabilities of unlocking phones by the masses… why don’t you come up with a reasonable counter offer that promotes/exercises your American Patriotism and Rights all at one shot? I can kill more than 2 birds with 1 stone.
